Course Overview
This workshop explores how educators can responsibly and effectively use AI tools when writing student report cards. Participants will learn best practices for using AI to draft comments, improve clarity, and save time while maintaining personalized, meaningful feedback. Through hands-on activities and discussions, they will practice refining AI-generated drafts to reflect authentic assessments. Ethical considerations, including privacy, transparency, and equity, will be emphasized to ensure professional and trustworthy reporting.
Facilitator
Patrick Jefford is the Vice-Principal, Curriculum, and Learning Support Coordinator at La Grande Boissière Primary School. Previously, he served as the Technology for Learning Coordinator at the same school. With over 25 years of experience in education, he has taught at all primary levels in Switzerland and Canada and worked as an educational technology consultant for teachers in Québec. Passionate about integrating technology into classrooms since the beginning of his teaching career in 1998, he supports educators in the ethical and effective use of digital tools. He holds a Master’s in International Education from Durham University and a Bachelor's in Primary and Preschool Education from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify responsible and inappropriate uses of AI in writing report card comments, including strategies for safeguarding student privacy and avoiding generic feedback.
- Apply AI tools to generate draft report card comments and refine them to create personalized, authentic, and balanced student feedback.
- Evaluate ethical challenges associated with AI-generated content and develop actionable solutions to ensure responsible and transparent reporting practices.
Outcome
Upon completion, teachers will:
- Use AI to draft personalized and meaningful report card comments while ensuring privacy.
- Refine AI-generated drafts to produce clear, authentic, and balanced student feedback.
- Evaluate ethical issues related to AI in report cards and apply solutions for transparency and equity.
